Ted Cohen and the real Napster story For years, journalists, academics and other writers have accused the major record companies of short-sightedness in suing Napster out of existence rather than negotiating with Shawn Fanning in good faith. In this edition of the Future of the Music Business industry veteran and former EMI Sr.VP, Ted Cohen reveals the true story! Ted discusses Napster's "Congressman's Daughter" campaign in which they lobbied Congress to create a special loophole in the Copyright Law to allow Napster to operate without the consent of the labels, and when that failed, Napster offered a paltry flat fee in comparison to what the record companies were earning from CDs. In sum, Napster made the record companies an offer they had to refuse, instead of an offer they couldn't refuse. TUNE IN to here the full story!
